that tracks, actually, the linguist's goal of studying how language evolves doesn't fit with the Academie's apparent goal of never letting it

I'm not sure how true that is. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_members_of_the_Acad%C3%A9mie_fran%C3%A7aise doesn't list any, nor does https://www.academie-francaise.fr/les-immortels/les-quarante-aujourdhui, but there are and have been several "philologists" listed, including 2 current members, and at least one of the past ones, Georges Dumézil, is considered a linguist. So maybe cryptolinguists?
